Glorious Food! March 16, 2008

Penang - My favourite city in Malaysia – the blend of old and new. I’ve been looking forward to this trip, although it was a pretty last minute decision. I love road trips. The farther the better, so as long as I’m not driving throughout the entire journey! I think roadtrips are fun. Family or friends. In a car or in the coach, I love the bonding session that roadtrip allows. Since I’ve already posted the pictures in Facebook, I’ll just post up some pictures of glorious foooddd in Penang, the only place in Malaysia where we’ll eat like… 10 times a day!
The Food at ’Big Tree’ (in hokkien) is really cheap. We had rice, 2 chicken dishes, soup, taufu, seafood for only RM48 for 4 pax!!

Unless you’re a local, you’d probably just drive past this old, rundown coffee shop without any hint of interest. They serve the best oo chien (Fried Oyster). Came here for two consecutive days!

Of course, no stop in Penang is complete without visiting the famous cendol stall at Penang Road or soup torpedo for supper (soup torpedo = cow’s dick soup). This picture taken is oxtail soup since they already ran out of…..torpedo.

Then…there’s also another one of Penang’s trademark – lobak.

I have a terrible craving for the chee cheong fun at Genting Coffee Shop. This is by far the best Penang chee cheong fun I’ve ever tasted. The sauce is thick and creamy, peanut butter balanced out the strong smell from the prawn paste.

While in Penang, take a walk around the streets and you might be delighted by the treasures of spice and flavours contained within this little Pearl of the Orient. Small shops like these sell the best cookies and cakes, still made in the traditional method.
